Bajrang Punia obtains UK visa, will travel to US for training ahead of CWG
Star Indian wrestler Bajrang Punia has got a UK visa for the upcoming Commonwealth Games. The Sports Authority of India (SAI) on Saturday informed that the 28-year-old will now leave for the United States to train before traveling to the Birmingham Commonwealth Games.
Since, he will go directly to the Commonwealth Games from his training base in the United States, it will be difficult for Bajrang to complete the UK visa formalities later. Now that he has got it, Bajrang can train in the US without worrying about the matter.

The Tokyo Olympic bronze medalist was supposed to go to the University of Michigan in the US for training ahead of the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham last month but had to stay in India due to a delay in getting a UK visa.
“The Ministry of Sports, through the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), was in touch with the British High Commission to obtain a UK visa for Bajrang, which has now been received,” said a media release by SAI.
On several occasions, the Ministry of External Affairs has helped the Sports Ministry in obtaining visas for athletes traveling abroad for competitions and training ahead of the Commonwealth Games. 2018 Commonwealth Games gold medalist Bajrang and fellow wrestler Deepak Punia will leave for the US from India later this week. They will train at the University of Michigan until July 30, after which both will leave for Birmingham.
The Lakshya Olympic Podium Scheme (TOPS) of the Sports Ministry has facilitated exposure trips. The training stint in the United States will be instrumental in preparing for the CWG and other upcoming major competitions such as the Wrestling World Championship, which is scheduled to take place in Belgrade in September.
A total of 111 overseas appearances in various sports have been funded by the Ministry of Sports since the Tokyo Olympics, led by the CWG. CWG 2022 will be held in Birmingham from 28 July to 8 August.
