Complete the filming of Varanasi’s Gyanvapi Masjid by Tuesday, the court said: 10 facts

A Varanasi court said today, video inspection of Gyanvapi Masjid will continue

Varanasi:
A local court today said the video inspection of the Gyanvapi Masjid, located next to the iconic Kashi Vishwanath temple in Varanasi, will continue and should be completed by Tuesday.

Here’s your 10-point cheatsheet for this big story:

  1. The court has said that videography can be done at all the places sought by the petitioners. The petitioners’ lawyers had asked for the filming to be done inside including the basement of the mosque.

  2. The court had in April this year ordered the inspection on petitions by five Hindu women seeking permission for a year to pray at a Hindu temple behind the western wall of the Gyanvapi mosque complex in Varanasi.

  3. The survey is to be completed by May 17, counsel for the petitioners told NDTV outside the court today.

  4. The petitioners’ counsel Subhash Nandan Chaturvedi said that the locks of NDTV would be broken to make way for the surveyors and action would be taken against those who tried to stall the process. The lawyer told NDTV that members from both the sides would go in and conduct a survey.

  5. The court today said it has decided not to replace the commissioner overseeing the survey. The counsel for the petitioners told NDTV that the court has appointed two more survey commissioners; In total there are now three.

  6. Gyanvapi Masjid Management Committee’s lawyer Abhay Nath Yadav has said that the court’s order is illegal and that the lawyers will challenge it soon.

  7. The site is currently opened for prayer once a year. Women also seek permission to pray to “other visible and invisible deities within the old temple complex”. The local court had earlier directed the authorities to submit a report by May 10. The survey, which began last Friday, could not be completed due to a dispute over videography inside the mosque.

  8. The Joint Secretary of the Masjid Committee, Syed Mohammad Yasin, had said yesterday that there are barricades around the Gyanvapi Masjid and the petitioners want their videography to be done openly.

  9. The petitioners’ counsel Shivam Gaur had claimed that in the order of the videography survey issued by the court on April 26, they can do the survey by going inside the barricading. However, the Masjid Committee said that the court had not given any order for videography inside the mosque, but only allowed up to the courtyard, which is outside the barricades that surround the mosque area.

  10. The Masjid Committee alleged that Commissioner Ajay Kumar Mishra had earlier tried to get the videography done inside the Gyanvapi Masjid without a court order.
