Coronavirus Pandemic May 3 News Highlights: The Indian SARS-CoV2 Genomics Sequencing Consortium or INSACOG has finally confirmed the presence of the Omicron strain – the XE variant – in India. Weeks after reporting the highly virulent strain in both Maharashtra and Gujarat, the INSACOG analysis says that one of the reported cases is of the XE variant. While the INSACOG bulletin did not specify which state had the XE type case, officials had earlier dismissed Maharashtra’s report on Omicron’s sub-version. However, officials say that there is no need to panic. Omicron’s Xe variant is said to be 10 percent more transmissible than Omicron’s ba.2 strain, which is currently the dominant strain worldwide. A report in the Indian Express quoted a government official as saying that very few recombinant variants have been identified in India so far and there are no reports of any Covid clusters due to such recombinant strains.
