MS Dhoni’s sudden decision to quit Test was brave and selfless: Ravi Shastri

former captain of india M S Dhoni Indian head coach Ravi Shastri has said that when he abruptly and midway through Australia’s tour of Australia in 2014, he acted bravely and selflessly and did not drag himself into 100 Test matches.

“MS was from India, truly the greatest player in the world, with three ICC trophies under his belt, including two World Cups and some very impressive silverware from the IPL. He was in good form, and was just 10 matches away from completing 100 Tests,” wrote Shastri in his recently released book “Stargazing: The Players in My Life”.

“Still one of the top three fittest players in the team, he will have the opportunity to boost his career figures if nothing else. True, he wasn’t getting any younger, but he wasn’t that old either! His decision made no sense,” Shastri further wrote about MSD’s retirement plans.

The former India all-rounder, who has written about some of the players in his book, said that he tried to persuade the former India wicketkeeper to reconsider his decision. However, he feels that Dhoni took the right decision by sticking to it.

Shastri was the director cricket of the Indian team when Dhoni decided to hang up his shoes.

“All cricketers say that milestones and milestones don’t matter, but some do. I approached the issue in a roundabout way, checking in for an opening to change his mind. But there was a persistence in MS’s tone that kept me from pursuing the matter. Looking back, I think his decision was the right one; Brave and selfless too,” wrote Shastri.

“Leaving the most powerful position in cricket in the world, in a way, could not have been easier.”

Shastri called Dhoni’s hands “faster than a pickpocket” while keeping wickets.

“MS is an unconventional cricketer. His technique cannot be easily replicated in front and behind the stumps. My suggestion to the youth is not to try to imitate them until it comes naturally. What made him so successful was his brilliant hands. They were faster than pickpockets! No other wicketkeeper, at least in the era that MS has played, was not so quick. He was the best in the world for a long time, and a long distance in white-ball cricket,” Shastri wrote next to Dhoni.

“MS was quick in observation of what was happening on the field, and was adamant when it came to making decisions based on ‘reading’ the propensity of the game. This quality of him went unnoticed simply because He made some such mistakes. His success with the decision review system shows not only good judgment, but also how well he will be behind the stumps to make a call.”

Shastri termed Dhoni as one of the three most influential Indian cricketers apart from Sachin Tendulkar and Kapil Dev.

“The impact of MS on Indian cricket has been immense. As a player, he is in the same league as Sachin Tendulkar and Kapil Dev where multi-format excellence is concerned. (Virat Kohli, if he maintains the form for the next few years, will be included in this club, but I can’t think of a fourth right now.) Nevertheless, when he first came on the international scene, So it was less likely.
