On my last trip Coastal Karnataka, I discovered a lot of hidden gems. Extremely offbeat destinations that the outside world barely knew. One of them was St. Lawrence Church in Attur, Karkala, also known as Attur Church.
With an architectural style that appears to be a mixture of Gothic and Romanesque, Karkala Church looks straight out of a fairy tale. It almost reminded me of Neuschwanstein Castle Bavaria Germany. To add to this, the church has a long and interesting history that is full of many miracles. If you are a culture vulture like me, then you know that you cannot miss seeing a church like this.
I’m glad I stopped to explore this pit in Karkala Beautiful church of atturu. However, when I came back, I realized that there is not much information online about how to get to this place. Therefore, I have prepared this detailed guide for curious travelers like you. I hope this guide to St. Lawrence Church Attur will help you plan your trip easily and see the best that this basilica has to offer.

History of Attur Church
St. Lawrence Church in Attur-Karkala has a long and illustrious history behind it. It is believed that a church existed in the area in 1859 before the Catholics of Karkala were imprisoned by Tipu Sultan. After the death of Tipu Sultan, the surviving Catholics returned and built a small church in Nakre in 1801.
The present temple of Karkala Church was built only in 1739 when there was a shortage of space in the Nakre Church. Legend has it that the small statue of St. Lawrence (which you can still see in the church today) miraculously selected a place for its new temple. And it was in the foothills of the Parpale Hills in Attur!
For the next 150 years, the church remained a small temple. However, as the number of pilgrims and believers grew, the need for expansion became apparent. New construction began in 1994. Today you can see that the semi-Gothic façade was built and the whole church was reorganized in 2001. What you see as the entrance to the church today is a completely new addition. But a grand, nonetheless!
In August 2016, St. Lawrence Church was granted the status of Minor Basilica, which is the 22nd in India.
St. Lawrence Church and its wonders
The Church of St. Lawrence in Karkala is considered to be the site of many miracles. Devotees come to this place to cure their deadly diseases, get blessings of children and get suitable jobs. They often light large candles, some up to 3-4 feet high, so that the wishes can be fulfilled.
The St. Lawrence Basilica is located in a small village called Attur, about 4 km from the Karkala bus stand in the foothills of the Parpale Hills. Karkala is a small town in Udupi district Coastal Karnataka And is home to some of the most revered Jain Basadis and Bahubali idols in the region.
What to see in St. Lawrence Church in Attur?
- Mask: If you are an art or architecture lover or none, then the façade of Karkala Church will not stop impressing you. You will see essential gothic elements such as a clear focus on verticality, pointed arches and huge stained glass windows. The entire ensemble is quite similar to Disney’s one fairy palace and makes a worthy Instagram photo.
- Holy place: The main temple of the church is also worth visiting. It is beautifully decorated with yellow and has a statue of St. Lawrence. Here, you will also see some of the most beautiful stained glass windows in India.
- Statue of St. Lawrence: At the end of the temple, just outside the back door, you can also see a miraculous statue of St. Lawrence displayed in a glass case. Apparently, this is the same statue that stood firmly in Attur when the devotees were looking for a new place to build the church in 1739.
- Miracle pool: At the far end of the church is a terraced pond called Pushkarini. Devotees believe that the water in this pond cures the sick. Therefore, this pond is often called the miraculous pond.
- Attur Jatre: Jatre or Attur Festival is the annual religious and cultural festival of the church. It is held every year for 5 days between 21 to 28 January. It includes a traditional prayer ceremony called novena followed by a feast.
The church is open every day between 6 am and 7 pm. A look at Group time here Before you plan your trip depends on whether you want to join the gathering or not.
Tips to visit Attur Church in Karkala
- Dress respectfully because it is a functional religious place.
- Come here early in the morning or in the afternoon to take great pictures of the church façade. Otherwise it becomes difficult to avoid the glare of the sun. All my pictures here were taken around noon and you can clearly see the sun at the top. I would love a soft light any day.
- It can be very hot during the day. Even though there is not much to do outside, I highly recommend that you carry your sunglasses, water, and sunscreen. By the way, there is also clean drinking water at the far end of the temple.
