MUMBAI: Seven of the over dozen villages protesting against the proposed Wadhwan port at Dahanu taluka in Palghar district on Monday totally boycotted the assembly polls. The over one lakh voters, comprising tribals, raised slogans like ‘Wadhwan Bunder Hutwa’ (Do away with the port) and ‘boycott election’ as voting began at 7 am on Monday.
Villages like Wadhwan, Varor, Dhakti Dahanu, Gungwada, Tadiyale, Badapokharan, and Vangaon saw zero voter turnout. In villages like Dhumket, Uchcheli, Dandi, Chinchani there were reports of some participation. Villages under the Wadhwan Bunder Virodhi Sangarsh Samiti had at a meeting on Sunday asked voters to ‘voluntarily’ boycott voting.
The Dahanu assembly seat is believed to be a straight win for the BJP sitting MLA Paskal Dhanare. Villagers said the BJP has not made any commitment regarding the scraping of the project. While Dhanare’s opponent Vinod Bhiva of the CPI (M) was banking on the 70,000 assured voters of Talasari, who are against the bullet train project, locals said Bhiva, too, was unable to give any assurance about the scrapping of the port project.
